Wikipedia is a very effective channel to globally improve the findability, visibility and reusability of images from the heritage collections of the KB, the national library of the Netherlands. In this article I will illustrate this, based on three reuse indicators (KPIs) that I measured in December 2022. I will also show that during the period 2013-2022 our image collections have reached ever-increasing global audiences.
One of the core tasks of the KB, the national library of the Netherlands is to bring as many people as possible into contact with our digitized collection images, including our collection highlights, medieval manuscripts, historical atlases, alba amicorum, broadsheet prints, children’s picture books, flora and fauna books or catchpenny prints.
Since 2014, the KB has structurally used the Wikimedia platforms to fulfill this task. First, we upload our (out of copyright, public domain) images to Wikimedia Commons, the free and open media repository best known as the place where the writers of Wikipedia (have to) get their images from. These images are then used by the Wikipedia community to illustrate and enrich the encyclopedic articles.
At the end of December 2022, I measured three interconnected indicators (KPIs) for the reuse and public outreach of our images via the Wikimedia platforms:
Because I have also measured these KPIs in the past, I am able to put these figures into a historical context, from 2013 to 2022.
In 2014 we started making image donations to Wikimedia Commons, over the years the number of KB images has grown steadily. As of 20 December 2022, there were 27.296 images available in the KB Commons repository. The table below (source) shows the historical growth.
Translation of column headers:
1. Datum meting = Date of measurement
2. Aantal KB-gerelateerde media-bestanden op Commons = Number of KB related media files on Wikimedia Commons
3. Groei t.o.v. vorige meting = Growth compared to previous measurement (absolute numbers)
4. Groei in % = Growth in %
A brief analysis of this table:
Wikipedia writers use our images to illustrate articles. On 20 December 2022 I measured the number of unique Wikipedia articles (in all language versions) that use those images: Of the
These figures are further detailed in the article Public outreach and reuse of KB images via Wikipedia, 2014-2022 (December 2022). The table below (source) shows the historical development.
Translation of column headers:
1. Datum meting = Date of measurement
2. Aantal unieke Wikipedia-artikelen waarin KB-mediabestanden opgenomen zijn = Number of unique Wikipedia articles that include KB media files (=this KPI)
3. Aantal taalversies van Wikipedia waarin KB-mediabestanden opgenomen zijn = Number of language versions of Wikipedia that contain KB media files
4. Aantal hergebruikte KB-mediabestanden in al die taalversies van Wikipedia = Number of reused KB media files in all those language versions of Wikipedia
5. Totaal aantal KB-mediabestanden op Wikimedia Commons, zie KPI2 = Total number of KB media files on Wikimedia Commons (see first KPI above)
6. Percentage hergebruik van KB-mediabestanden in Wikipedia = Percentage of reuse of KB media files in Wikipedia
Also here a brief analysis of the table:
Very nice, all those Wikipedia articles containing our images, but if they are never requested, then our images will also never be seen. Fortunately for the KB, this is not the case: in the period January 2022 to October 2022 (10 months), there were 10.3 million such page request on average every month, as column 4 of the table below (source) shows.
Translation of column headers:
1. Datum meting = Date of measurement
2. Meetperiode in maanden = Measurement period in months
3. Totaal aantal opvragingen van Wiki-pagina’s met KB-beelden in deze periode = Total number of requests of Wiki pages containing KB images during this period
4. Gemiddeld aantal paginaopvragingen (page views) per maand in deze period = Average number of page requests (page views) per month in this period (=this KPI)
The data on which the numbers in the table are based can also be displayed graphically:
